Quick answer: Check battery usage before changing settings. Fast drain is commonly caused by high screen brightness, long screen-on time, poor network signal, navigation/video/gaming, background activity, heat or an ageing battery.
Battery problems are easier to diagnose when you look for what changed rather than immediately installing a “battery saver” app.
Check battery usage
Open your phone’s battery settings and review which apps used the most power since the last charge or over the recent period available on your device.
An app at the top is not automatically a problem: if you watched video for three hours, the video app should be high. Look for apps consuming a lot of battery despite little actual use.
Check screen-on time
The display is one of the largest power users on most phones.
High brightness, long screen timeout and hours of video or social media can reduce battery life substantially. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and shorten the automatic screen-off time if yours is unusually long.
Weak signal can increase battery use
A phone in an area with poor mobile coverage may work harder to maintain a connection.
If battery drain is noticeably worse in one location, weak signal may be contributing. Wi-Fi can help where a stable network is available.
Watch for heat
Heavy gaming, navigation, camera use, video calls and charging in a hot environment can raise device temperature.
Heat can reduce efficiency and accelerate battery wear. Let the phone cool naturally and avoid demanding tasks while diagnosing the drain.
Restart after unusual drain
If the battery suddenly became worse without an obvious explanation, restart the phone. A stuck app or system process can sometimes keep the processor active longer than expected.
Consider battery age
Rechargeable batteries gradually lose capacity. An older phone can show perfectly normal software behaviour while simply holding less energy than it did when new.
If the phone shuts down unexpectedly, shows battery swelling, becomes unusually hot or loses charge extremely quickly even while idle, have the battery inspected by a qualified technician.
